The 2008–2014 collapse in property crime

Recorded property crime peaked in 2008 (239,170) and fell to 190,934 in 2014: −20%. It is the largest shift in the series and accounts for most of the national total's decline over that period.

Between 2009 and 2014: theft from motor vehicle −39% (45,698 → 27,845; 2025: 0); residential burglary −26% (26,016 → 19,283; 2025: 7,474); commercial/industrial burglary −36% (16,389 → 10,564; 2025: 5,071).

Recorded ≠ actual. The specific-theft series only exist for 1993, 2001 and 2009 onwards. Part of the fall tracks the 2010–2014 economic crisis, the decline of cash and better vehicle and home security; the data cannot separate these causes.
